MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

The fact that southern ratepayers of Stratford Borough have convened meetings for the purpose of discussing matters municipal, and have no-: minuted candidates to contest scats on the Council, is being cited as an example of parochialism, and an indication that individual interests are being placed before the general welfare of the Borough. The meeting held in the llinomoa Lodge Hall last night was not a public one, but, at the same time, the meeting was open to the Press, and a report of the proceedings, which appears in another column, shows that these cnergei.t southerners have done good service to the Borough. It was explained hy| the chairman (Mr W. Brooding) that) the committee set up at a former! meeting had been under the impression that many of the present Councillors would not again seek municipal honours, in which case the Committee had “sounded” several prominent citizens, whom they thought might be induced to offer, their services to the ratepayers. It had been found, however, that the exodus of Councillors was not to bo so great as they had feared, and the Committee was hopeful that Councillors Dingle and Healy, especially, would continue to represent the ratepayers. Later in the evening the Committee had the satisfaction of knowing that three former Councillors—Councillors Dingle, Morison, and Lawson—had consented to 1)0 again nominated, though Councillor Healy, who of late has had added responsibilities thrust upon him in the Presidency of the Stratford A. and P. Association, remained adamant, regretting that ho could not see his way to accept nomination. Generally speaking, apathy in municipal matters is so ever-present and so effectively deadly that it is quite cheering' to find some such movement as that now being made by certain southern ratepayers. What are the other districts doing?
