A PECULIAR POSITION
Invercargill, April 10. A peculiar position lias arisen in connection with the contract for the supply of bread to charitable institutions. MAORI’S MONEY (£280) STOLEN. Auckland, April D. Yesterday an elderly Maori drew from a bank in Auckland £2BO. He stayed the night at Onehunga with a nephew named Clark and otluu Maoris. During the night lie was disturbed by someone crawling on his hands and knees out of the door. He aroused the other natives, but the visitor got clear away. The Maori discovered that the whole of his money
was missing. ENORMOUS DEMANDS ON THE TREASURY. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, April 10. A deputation from tho Cook Ammonal Committee asked Mr Massey for a subsidy towards the cost of the Cook Memorial at .Queen Charlotte Sound, which amounted to £ISOO. Mr Massey said that the Government would keep the Ward Government’s promise and give £370. He would not promise anything further at present. The demands for money during the last few days'had been simply enormous and would hardly he ciedited. There were an enormous number of applications for school buildings and roads, etc., which amounted to far more than the Government could supply. MOTOR LAUNCH IRENE. " r l; ,1 1\ i r.f, J i ‘ i . Hastings, April 10. Tab motor launch Irene, washed ashore at Gisborne to-day, is owned 1) yMr Norman Wellwood,of Hastings. It’broke adrift from its moorings at Kidnappers on Easter Sunday. A GAMING CHARGE. Wellington, April 10. The police this afternoon raided the premises of a hairdresser in Mercer street and arrested the occupier, Gilbert Henry Price, on a charge of keeping a common gaming house. Two other men named Nelson M illiamson and Bertram Cowles Williams were apprehended on charges of assisting in the management of the place, while Frank Campbell and Frederick Moss were taken into custody for being found on the premises. All the men were subsequently charged at the Magistrate’s Court with the offences mentioned, and were remanded till April 18th. Bail was allowed.
THE MAKURA ALL WELL. Wellington, April 10. The secretary of the General Rost Office has received the following telegram from the manager of the Union Steamship Company, Dunedin;—“l In* Auckland manager has a message from the Makura that indicates that the had weather has moderated, and she expects to arrive at midnight on Friday. ’ No further damage is mentioned. Wo expect to despatch her from Auckland at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
A SOLICITOR’S LAPSE. Dannevirke, April 10 Application was made by the police to tlio Magistrate to-day to have a solicitor named Cecil Glass Downes, who appeared on a charge of drunkenness,* committed to Rotoroa. Ho had been there previously for a term. Counsel for accused asked for a chance so that his client could bo sent to Australia for a fresh start. The Magistrate said that he did not think he should offer facilities for the export of the Dominion’s degenerates to another colony. To send him to Australia was only to invito a continuance of his present conduct, and would bo criminal until the drink was out of him. Accused was committed to Rotoroa for 12 months.
