The Toko settlers hold a mortgage on the weather, and threats of foreclosure always produce something extra special for the day of the annual sports. For years past the sports have been held under ideal weather conditions, but yesterday was simply perfect, the cold southerlies of the past few days having given place to a cloudless sky and bracing sunshine. The attendance was large. In Stratford there was not a horse to be hired for love of money—everything that could draw a trap had gone to Toko—while the train fi’om Pohokura was crowded with patrons of the sports. The Stratford Municipal Brass Band was in attendance, and discoursed an excellent programme of music. Under the capable tuition of Bandmaster Marshall, the younger players have come on wonderfully, and the band is now better than it has been for years. Throughout the day, things were kept moving, and the officials are to be congratulated on the excellent manner ip which the events Were got off. The handicappers’ adjustments were entirely satisfactory, and some splendid finishes wdre: witnessed,' notably that of tip mile,| when, the leading, man was beaten on the tapd. The catering was in the hands of IVtr Elder,' and was :excelll?nip are duo rtfb the secretary (Mr (?.•;,E'. Bocock), andjtp members of the enthusiastic committee, who worked splendidly. The Toko Farmers Union took advantage of the sports to hold a competition on the grounds, for the best pen of five heifer calves (any breed) suitable for dairying purposes. Tokd tradesmen oTerdd" as‘first prize a handsome ■ silver chhlleng cup, to be won twice in, succession or three times', at intervals, while the Toko Sports Club as well as the Farmers’ Union offered prizes of two guineas. There were eleven entries, and the judges, Messrs H. Hobbs and G. Smith gave the following awards:— Messrs E. Jones 1, G. F. Chapman 2, E. Jones 3, G. W. Burgham 4, I). Maxwell 5, N. Gernhoefer 6.
