THE BABY BONUS.
ALLEGED CONSPIRACY. The commencement of a case—the first of its kind—which is founded on alleged conspiracy to obtain the maternity bonus, was heard in the City Court, Melbourne, on 28th March, when two maternity nurses, Hannah Janet Burrell (39), of Mount Alexander road and George-str.eet, Fitzroy, and Clarice Donaldson (42), of Burgess street, Hawthorn, were charged with having conspired to defraud. The charge was that defendants, between October 10, 1912, and March 20, 1913, at Melbourne, did conspire together with other persons (names unknown), by means of false pretences to dofaud the Commonwealth! of Australia of divers ■ sums of money by means of fictitious claims under the Maternity Bonus.Allowance,.Act ol 1912.
Detective* ißumatt said that- the- two accused were maternity nurses, and the chargS arose out'of fictitious claims under the maternity bonus provisions of the Comnpmiyealt h.. _ In consequence of inquiries into a'great number -of bonus applications under the Maternity Act, lie arrested the two accused at 4.30 '“that morning. Accused were Remanded for 14 days, bail being fixedr.at £25. •
