WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.
[from our own correspondent.] The local tennis club 'have -issued a challenge to the Te Wera Club to play a match on Thursday next. The Whanga. representatives will journey by the morning train to Te Wera, returning the same night. Arrangements are ■ well forward for the Organ Fund concert and dance on the 18th inst. The Rev. T. Bailey, whose reputation as a high-class entertainer preceded him here, has been secured for several items. Miss E. Aylward is going to give an exhibition of fancy club-swinging, and several children’s items are being arranged for.
A meeting was held to-night (Friday) in the Hall to discuss .the formation of a Social Club for AVhanga. There was a good attendance, and a strong committee was formed to carry out details. The idea is to run socials, euchre parties, etc., throughout the winter months under one general committee, and devote any profits to the promotion of sports and pastimes in .the district. Miss M. Wilson left yesterday on an. extended holiday to the Auckland district.
Miss Ada Sly, who has been spending a fortnight at Mangaono, returns to Palmerston/to-morrow-i ■,
Mrs H. Strom bom and MissTerguson left this morning on a holiday trip to X-uw Plymouth. Last night the friends of Mr P. Keller entertained him at a social and smoke concert, and a. very pleasant evening was spent. Mr Keller left to-day to enter the army of benedicts, and will arrive back here witli his bride about the second week in May. '"The Public Hall Committee hold a meeting to-morrow night to discuss improvements to the Hall, in view- of the demand for it during the coming winter.
Several Whanga. farmers journeyed to Te Wera for the Shefep Dog Trials yesterday, returning last night. Mr Olaf McCutchan, whoso dogs were to compote, had the misfortune to lose them on the way dow r n, the dogs making back home. When word was received here that the Minister - for Public Works (Mr Fraser) would not come to AVhanga. this time, the township got busy and sent'Messrs F. Court, T. Bradley, E. McCluggage and AV. Harris, out to Stratford as a deputation to interview the Minister there, returning by motor car next morning. The questions of metalling of the township, the need for expedition in the erection of our station buildings, and the * township ■drainage scheme were all discussed with the Minister, and favourable consideration was promised. The township is much alive to its needs, and means to have them.
The local Library has received from the Government a subsidy of £8 11s Id towards the purchase of new,books. This will bring the total number- of volumes in the Library up to about 600.
