NEWTON KING'S WEEKLY REPORT. 1 On Thursday, 20th instant, I held a clearing sale on account of Messrs Fisher Bros., Urenui. . There; was a large attendance of buyers and good competition was obtained for all lines as follows: F.M. ewes 10s 9d, 2-tooth ewes 13s 7d, 4-tooth ewes 13s 3d, 6tooth ewes 13s Id, 2-tooth wethers 12s lOd, 4,6, and f.m. wethers 13s 3d, ewe lambs 7s Id, wether lambs 7s, cull lambs 4s 2d, cull ewes 4s 3d, J-draught mares £2B to £35, hack £8 ss, buggy mares £ll to £l4 10s, gig £8 ss, spring trap £8 10s, dray £6 10s, wool dray £8 10s, buggy £l6, roller £l3, drill £lO 10s, wool press £lO 10s, and sundries at satisfactory prices. At Raliotu on Tuesday, 25th, I had a good entry and attendance with keen bidding for all lines. Some pens of well-grown weaner steers were yarded and sold up to £2 2s. Prices obtained were; Best mixed weaners £1 12s to £1 15s, small 19s to £1 3s 6d, coloured weaner heifers £2 10s, good weaner steers £1 16s 6d to £2 2s, snfcdl or bad coloured 11s to 17s Gd, heifers and calves £3 13s to £5 Bs, empty heifers up to £3 10s, coloured 18-mths steers £2 14s to £3 2s Gd, 2&-year steers £5 Is, in-calf 20-mths heifers £3 15s, bulls £4 15s to £7 4s, store cows £2 to £3 12s, forward cows £4 2s to £4 18s, fat cows up to £6 10s, lambs (small) 6s Gd to 6s lOd, unbroken filly £lO ss, 3-year filly £9 10s. On the same day at Waitara road for Mr R. Thompson’s clearing sale there was a big attendance, buyers being present from all parts of Taranaki. The herd had been exceptionally well cared for and sold under best competition at prices from £l7 5s for the top priced cow to £6 15s for f or aged cows, averaging £lO 10s for the line. Choice weaner Jersey heifers £3 Is to £4, weaner steers £1 16s, goats 16s, drill £26 10s, buggy £l7, gig £ll 10s, mares and foals ,£l2 to £l7 10s, sows, and litters £3 12s Gd to £4 10s, bull £7 15s, stack of hay j£lo. At Urenui on Wednesday, 26th, both cattle and sheep came forward in excess of advertised numbers. The sheep, on account of D. McKellar’s estate, were all cleared. A good line of full-mouthed ewes realised 11s sd, culls 3s to 6s 7d, 2 to 6-tooth wethers 14s 7d, rams 7s to 13s Gd. Competition for other sheep was very quiet. Good in-calf heifers and weaners were in improved demand. Last Saturday I held my usual,,sale and again have to report a very good entry of poultry and various lines. 1 quote as follows Turkeys 7s to 7s 3d, ducks Is 3d to 2s, hens Is to 2s 3d, geese 2s 6d to 3s, cockerils lOd to Is 6d; cabbage about 2s per sack, potatoes 8s 6d to 10s cwt.; furnitmo and sundries at usual auction pi ices. MATTHEWS, BENNETT AND CO.’S REPORT. Matthews, Bennett and Co. report that owing to the Easter holidays there was a small muster of stock. There was plenty of demand, and nearly everything was sold as follows: Calves £1 7s 6d to £2 Os 6d, weaner heifers £2 5s 6d, heifers r.w.b. £3 19s, store cows £3 to £4 9s, May y calvers £3 5s to £7, springers £5 ss, f.m. ewes 7s to 8s 3d. WEBSTER, DOBSON AND CO.’S STOCK REPORT. At Stratford on Tuesday, owing to Easter holidays, there was only a moderate muster and small attendance. We quote; Mixed weaners 35s to 38s, do. small 20s to 245, weaner heifers 38s to £2, coloured heifers £3 ss, cows and calves £4 10s to £5, forward cows £4 to £4 10s, store do. £2 10s to £3 3s. Private sales as follows.—Mixed weaners 33s to 36s 6d, coloured wcaner heifers £2 14s 6d to £2 18s 6d, 18months coloured heifers. £5 Is to £6, 2-tooth wethers 13s 6d to 13s 9d, cull do. 10s, lambs 7s to 9s, store cows £3 10s, £3 18s, £4 ss, fat cows £5 10s, £O, pedigree jersey cows 371 and 40 guineas, heifers in calf £4 16s, £4 10s, ! £5, 2-year-old in calf coloured heifers 1 £7 10s to £B, empty heifers £3 10s. cantile Agency Co., Ltd.j Stratford branch, report as follows:—We held our monthly sale in our Kohuratahi yards on Wednesday, 19th instant, when there was an average yarding of 3030 sheep and 64 head of cattle. Bidding was fairly good and most of the stock changed hands at the following prices; Wether lambs (small) 6s to 7s 9d, mixed lamps (fair quality) 8s Gd to 9s 4d, cull owes (aged) 3 S 8d to 5s 6d, f.m. ewes inferior to fair quality 6s 5d to 11s sd, 4 to 6-tooth ewes 10s 6d to 11s Bd, 6-tooth ewes up to 13s, '2-tooth ewes (good quality) ’los 3d, 2,4, and 6-tooth wethers 13s 6d, 2-tooth wethers from 11s 6d for small to 14s 6d for fairly good stuff, 4-tooth wethers (fair quality, 13s 9d, f.m. wethers (good quality) 16s Id, rams 10s for medium to 37s for fair quality; bulls 86s; 18-month heifers 68s.
On Tuesday, 25th instant, we held our usual fortnightly, sale in our Stratford yards when there was a small yarding of 264 head of cattle. The sale was rather dull, and prices if anything somewhat easier, but the attendance was good. Weaners (small) 21s 6d to 35s for medium quality, good coloured weaner heifers, still in demand, made up to 60s, 20-month heifers in calf 82s 6d to 100 for a very nice line; store cows 56s to 78s 6d, forward cow® 90s to 110 s for good heavy stuff. Bulls 63s to 100 s, 2 3 - year-old steers 96s 6d, 3-year-old steers 120 s.
During the past, fortnight we have disposed of a considerable quantity of stock privately at the following prices: Lamb® from 8s up to 9s Gd for good quality; wethers, from 13s 9d to 14s 9d; weaners, from 25s to 455, one very nice line making 555; 2-tooth ewes, ■ really good quality, 16s; other linos of ewes from 12s Gd to 15s Gd for good stuff. We also sold a considerable number of rams at from £2 5s to £3 15s.
Qur Mr Scohie has' conducted several experiments with the explosive “Eruptite” during the past fortnight. Af"a demonstration given on Mr A. N. Haylock’s farm on the Upper Hastings road, on 14th instant, there were a large number of farmers present and they were thoroughly satisfied with the results achieved. Another detriotisti ation was also given at Mr Gatcnby’s farm on the Toko road, on 26th instant, and the spectators were again highly pleased with the shifting powers of the explosive, and we wore consequently enabled to hook several latge orders for “Eruptite.”
