A Wellington milk vendor was lined 40s and costs at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for selling milk containing more water than.is permitted by Statute. Counsel for the Health Department said that analysis showed that 17.3 per cent of water had been added. Counsel for the defence said his client had not watered the milk, nor had any of his agents, therefore he was not guilty of any moral turpitude. However, a plea of guilty would have to be entered for too large a proportion of water, as there was no excuse if analysis proved tfiat the watei exceeded the proportion allowed by the Act.
At the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court yesterday John Kennedy, fishmonger, was fined £3O for sly-giog selling. The police sent an informer to Kennedy’s shop with marked coins and a £1 note, and raided his premises a few minutes after the purchase of liquor had been made. The defence was that money was paid by the informer on account of a betting transaction. The Magistrate said that he had no doubt the money was paid for liquor, and allowed a fortnight in which to pay the fine. He said slygroggers need expect no mercy from the Court.
