AMONG THE CATTLESTOPS.
MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. AT A RAILWAY CROSSING.' (Per Press Association. - ) Marton, March 28. A miraculous escape from fatal accident occurred hero late yesterday afternoon; James McChesney, builder, and T. H. James, architect, Wanganui, w’ere driving to the racecourse, and when nearing the Main Trunk level crossing just north of the station, James told McChesney, who was driving, that they were close to it, but, being deaf, be.evidently did not hear, and continued on the journey. When a short distance away, James grabbed the reins, made an attempt to pull the horse off the line, but he was too late.
The engine dashed into the horse, tearing it away.and throwing it fifteen yards from the cattlestops. McChesney, who is an elderly man, was hurled on to the cattlestop on bis head. James wds thrown alongside the line, all the steps of the carriages passing over his body, as he lay alongside' lire rails. Only ’ one - shaft of the trap was broken. The horse wqs disembowelled, and had a hoof torn away, and was killed.
McChesney is suffering from a scalp \vound five inches long from the top of his head to the nape of his neck, and is also suffering from shock. James is suffering from nervous shock arid a slight knock on the back of the head, but was able to proceed to Wanganui. McChesney passed a fair night.
