A NEW MACHINE GUN.
The military corespondent of the London “Times” states that the Secretary for War has announced that a new pattern machine gun was about to be issued to the- cavalry, and that the question of issue to the infantry was still under consideration. ' The gun is the hew Vickers rifle calibre automatic gun, which the writer > paw •fired at Erith three years ago, am remarked that if the order were giver the infantry of our expeditionary force could be rearmed with the gur within nine months. Three year! have elapsed, and the question is stil under consideration for the infantry. The writer was much pleased with this gun, though the tripod mounting which was then used seemed in ferior to the Woolwich pattern. Messrs Vickers have since then invented ar. excellent tripod adaptable to three positions, and allowing the gun tc fire steadily and well. The chief ad vantage of the gun is its lightness Cooling arrangements allow water t( go right back over the bullet chamber of tlio barrel, and 25,000 rounds have been fired from one barrel, tin gun still giving good targets. binct the writer first referred to this gun it has been adopted by the Russian army, the Italian army and navy, the Japanese navy, and the Turkish navy. A large number of guns arc now under construction.
