The Waimato (Canterbury) District High' School recently lost the services bf a 'youth' who had begun teaching as a probationer, hut had been induced to accept ah opening in the Customs Department, as offering far better pay. The School Committee passed a resolution 'urging'that the salaries paid tc/‘probationers should be brought into line With' tho'Se' paid to beginners in other departments of the Civil 1 Service, and the resolution came before the’'South Canterbury Education Board at Timarii on Tiiesday. ; Members expressed ‘themselves in (sympathy with the recfbmmehdhtioh of the Committee, the' secretary remarking 1 that there was no sound reason why young men and women beginning life as teachers shotllcT he so poorly paid in comparison : with those entering the service of the State in other branches. It was stated that the youth from Waimate' wa& receiving £75 a year in the Customs Department/ hut he had had to begin teaching at £25. The Board resolved unanimously to forward the committee’s recommendation to the Education Department.
