Stratford sports will muster in strong force at Opunake on Monday, the attraction being the annual race meeting of that club. Of a poor lot engaged in the Maiden, Joey and Lady Gordon are best known. Timothy ran two good races at Wanganui, and will probably touch a short price in the hurdles, in which event he is opposed by a pool - lot. Five only paid up for the flying. Crawford is more “seasoned” than the rest of the field. The Club deserved a better field than six for their ‘£l2o Handicap. Styrax and Minora are ; both very well at present. Patronata, who showed good form at New Plymouth and Stratford; appeared to have struck form again, and will be meeting a very moderate lot in the Electric Stakes. From those that should know, Lucky Child is looked upon as the “goods” in the Trot. A poor class are engaged in the Welter. Styrax will start in this event, but his run in the Cup may not improve the son of Patronus. Lady Fran, who looks very well, is an acceptor. in this event. A very large field figure in the Final Stakes. Park Tide who is well just now, will probably start favourite. L. Nodder, the Stratford jockey, will probably give up riding, after Opunake, as he finds a great difficulty in keeping weight down.

Clonpett, the dam of the brilliant Astor, figures amongst the nominations at Opunake. The black marc was very fast in her day, and out of half a dozbn starts, was never out of a place. ; in. Styrax is moving very well at present, and providing the half-brother to Smilax get,s away well must run well at Opupake, at which meeting he will be ridden: by Bell, the successful light-weight,. ~ ■■ ■ .Arthur ( 01iyefl was |to, have riddeii Minora in the (ppunake, Handicap, but finds he cannot ride the w, jght (8.3).

hucky Child f is repoj;tpd, as being very well and will probably be well backed in the Trot at Opunake. He finished third at the same meeting last year, afterwards winning at Wanganui. V? .. 1.... Vi ........ i .

'Recipe Wan unhlt'ely starter ait Opunake. Mr McMahon, , the well-known (to the jockeys) Stipendiirf'Steward, will he a visitof 'tdOpuhhlvG on Monday, and no doitbf, 1 twill the “hoys” any help In annoiihting that' 1 the skull of the famous Musket was ih' the possession of a Papakura resident; the Auckland writer “Phaeton” recently remarked: “From what 1 can learn, the skin of the celebrated horse, when stored in the city, was v pretty well destroyed by the attacks of rodents, and it may have completely disappeared long since.’ Mr R. S. Abraham, the wellknown Manawatu sportsman, writes: “It may be of interest to you to know that Musket’s skin hangs in my hall at Palmerston North in a good state of preservation. It came into my hands through my brother-in-law, the late James Philson, who purchased the skin when the Auckland Racing Club had not the sense to acquire it.” It appears That Mr Abraham lias also in his possession part of one of Musket’s hoofs.
