HOSPITAL & CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was 1 eld this morning. Present: The chairman (Mr E. Marfell), and Messrs J. Christoffel, J. McAllister, W. Rogers, A. Meredith, and. E. Hine. It was decided to grant V)s a week charitable aid to a family of seven in the eastern district. The Board endorsed the following resolution: “The Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board desires to call the 'attention of the Govern nent to a resolution unanimously passed at a conference of Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards in Wellington in June, 19.11, requesting the Government tn found some State Colony or farm, wastrels, confirmed d'ltnkards other such work-sny individuals could be sent, and earnestly request that the question of carriyng such resolution into effect shall be brought before the consideration of Parliament at its next sesssion.” Mr McAllister referred to < ho r aises’ salaries, and stated Unit he considered that the sister at the local institution was underpaid, seeing that she had a certain amount of responsibility under the matron. Mr McAllister remarked that bo coaid not see why the man who ;akod the gar- ■ dens and cut the grass, or the girl who waxed the floors, should lie paid fin much as or more tnan \ ‘killed %hrse, who was a woman of experience, capable of taking up a bettor position. Unless she were paid properly the Board would have the same old difficulty of the sister leaving tor a more lucrative post elsewhere. Mr Hine asked how the salaiy compared with that obtain'd by sisters in other hospitals? Mr McAllister said that New Plymouth Hospital paid £BO a year, as against £6O paid here, while the matron's salary at each place was £IOO. Mr Penn, in answer to a question. replied that the nurse’s 'alary rose hi yearly increments of £5 to t'HO. The question of raising the salary paid by the Board will he considered at the April meeting.
