As a result of tlie increased cost of living the Methodist Conference fixed the minimum stipend of married ministers at £6O a quarter, unmarried ministers £45, and probationers £4O. ( CHINESE STOWAWAY IN BUNKERS. Fremantle, February 27. The captain of the steamer Charon was fined £7OO in connection with the discovery of seven Chinese stowaways aboard the vessel. Evidence showed that they had existed for three weeks in cavities scooped out of the coal, where they were unable to stand up. Chinese members of the crew lowered food and water to them. It has been discovered that a relative of one of the stowaways, while attempting to reach Australia on a previous occasion, hidden in the coal, was suffocated when the steamer was fumigated. FURNITURE FACTORY FIRE. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Melbourne, February 28. By fire Emerson Bros.’ furniture factory was destroyed. The damage, £7500, is covered by insurance.
