SPORTING.
NOTES BY CICERO. The Wanganui Jockey Club received a good response from owners for tiieir autumn fixture, which opens to-mor-row. The largo field of fourteen still remain in the Autumn Handicap 1 mile. Obligant, Con the Shaughraun, and Ceylon all claim friends. A like number figure in the Petre Hack, six furlongs. Postellion carried the support of his connections at Egmont, and though the black colt failed to win, he ran well enough to encourage his party to support him at Wanganui. Chamanade, who won at Taranaki, has gone on the right way, and is sure to be well backed. Six only paid the acceptance for the Westmere Hurdles. Bercola is mov-i ing nicely at present, and as he is usually running on at the end of 1 { miles he may be better suited by the two mile course. Nine at present remain in the Tayforth Hack Hurdles, I'] miles, including Bercola. As this gelding is engaged earlier in the day, the stable may rely on Allure woo showed really good form at Egmont. A dozen have made tiic final payment for the Cup. Labour Day (8.7) figures as top weight. Her party claim
that the Soult mare is quite as good as Gladstone, Solution, Cruicenclia, and Co. If that is correct then there is no need to look further for the winner. Up to the present, her form has been fair, but not up to the standard of those quoted. Mira has done a lot cf racing and travelling, and will probably he stale. Bronze, if in last year’s form, would have a gi;eat chance but this is doubtful, as Field Battery’s daughter has been troubled wifi; bleeding at the nose, which must affect her chance. Masterpiece is a real good one when in the humor, but has proved to he a horse of moods. Domino ran a real good third last year, and showed a glimpse of form at the (Auckland Cup meeting. Ho is one of the genuine stayers of the race. Cheddar, who figures next in the handicap, is reported as big in condition, but the writer doubts it, as Mr Watts’ representative looked very well at Egmont, three weeks ago. The Merriwee gelding won a mile race at Hawke’s Bay at New Year and also has a Great Autumn Handicap to his credit, having won that event in. 1911, and on that occasion running the twelve furlongs in the fast time of 2miu 34 3-5 sec. Master Laddo is unreliable. Lady Menschikoff is in at 6.9. She is very well at present, and should be handy at the finish. Tiresome is favoured by the Northerners, and recently ran second in the Takapuno Cup. Moutoa Girl ran a good race in the Manawatu Cup in which even, she finished second to Sir Solo. Her form since, however, does not warrant any support for an event like the one under review. Labour Day, Domino, and Lady Menschikoff should, bai accidents, provide a good finish. ihe Juvenile Handicap, five furlongs, has attracted nine runners, Jason and Princess Moutoa probably being fancied. Of the twelve left in the Wiritoa Hack, one mile, Patronymic and Austin (the latter in Tilley’s stable) will carry a lot of money. The Flying Handicap, six furlongs, will bring the first day’s racing to a close. A number of really brilliant sprinters are engaged. Autumnns (3.0) is undoubtedly the pick at the handicap. hi tne Middle Park Plate, decided at Hiccarton a few days ago, the Treadmill celt carried 9.1 and finished half a length away, in the smashing time of 1.13. The colt named, it may be mentioned, claims an engagement in the £SOO Jackson Stakes to be decided on Saturday.
Late advices state that Master Tupuhi has been scratched for the Wanganui Cup and Mallow for all engagements.
Jargon, who was recently put into work, has been causing his trainer anxiety, and was sent to Ins owner’s farm last week. It is the intention of his owner to have Cordon Rogue’s sou “fired” on both forelegs.
The locally owned Quo Vadis (Coronet—Rau Ran) is looking very nice just at present. This colt will he a starter at Dannevirke next wcyk.
J. Butler, who at present is working eight horses, intends taking five of that number to Opunake. Recipe (Stepniak—Gyre) who has been off the seone since winning a double at Feildiiig fifteen months ago. will probably make his reappearance at Opunake.
At the V.A.T.C. meeting held last week, Midnight Sun (9.0) was a starter in the Bond Cup of £SOO, 1$ miles. The New Zealander started at a long price, and ran accordingly. At the same meeting Arrow form (Multiform — Arrowroot) defeated a field of 29 in the Federal Stakes of £SOO, a race for 2-year-olds. Lady Menschikoff ran a good gallop in Hawera on Saturday morning by getting to the end of 1$ miles, with shoes on, in 2.13. Despite the large increase in prize money, the Pigment Club show a profit of something over £IOOO, to which must ho added a like amount paid as Government tax. , It is pleasing to note the club have taken the advice tendered by a well known Hawke’s Bay owner, and have added a classic event for two-year-olds to their summer programme. The once brilliant Soul tine, has evidently lost all form, for at Calcutta last month he ran nowhere in the Metropolitan Handicap, when carrying 0.7, or !)!bs less than the English horse Black Buck. At the same mealing another ex-Xow Zealander in Keerit (late Abrogine) was unplaced when carrying Bst in the Merchants’ I’late. An adjourned meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Metropolitan Jockey Club was held last night at New' Plymouth to further consider the running in the hurdle race at the second day of the recelrt meeting, lifter hearing further evidence the committee imposed a disqualification of twelve months on W. D. Young, rider
of Aviatrix, and a similar term oi F. Meagher, the rider of Timothy. 1 Flynn, the rider of Bercola, and E Abbott, the rider of Ptoxy, were cautioned. ft was decided to pay out tin second dividend in the race on Aviatrix.
