THE LOAN PROPOSALS.
(To the Editor “Evening Post.”) Sir, —Your correspondent signin himself “Citizen,” is absolutely clever. He. has actually found on. that wo are prepared to have our rate: increased in order that our properties may be increased in value. But h was not clev.er enough to see that w in the South most strongly object U being rated for improvements in tin North—improvements that will not i the slightest, degree affect us, am yet we shall have to pay for them Of what possible benefit to the Soutl will the drainage of the north-eas be? And yet if the drainage loan i. carried we shall have to pay for tha drainage, and pretty stiffly too. Spoal to a man in the South about the u«ron east drainage, and he at once declare he will have none of it. Speak to £ northern man of the bridge and In “goes off pop.” We, efieb want what suits us, and. the only way to secure fairness was to place ,all the proposal; as one. It was just here that Hi; Worship broke down. He, for the moment, failed to grasp the whole situation. He failed to see what an injustice it would be for one part o. the borough by reason of its preponderating rating power to enrich itself at the expense of another. He failed to hold the scales evenly between the different parts of the boroughfailed in that impartiality that a mayor should exercise. It is not toe late yet to remedy this. The proposals may yet bo reconsidered. Personally, I am by no means convinced that so large a loan even with the bridge thrown in would bo in the besi interests of the borough, but as said in a former letter, would prefe even that to illfeeling amongst th ratepayers, and the bitterness tha must ensue if one part of the loan is carried and another thrown out.— I am etc., H. WILSON. Broadway, 19th February, 1913.
