The feature of a swimming race across the harbour from Northcofce to Shelly Beach on Saturday was the fact that the course, which is a shade over a mile, was covered for the first time by a lady—Miss Large—who finished seventh, after a highly creditable performance. She has a nice free style, and possesses staying power seldom found in swimmers of her sex. With the limit allowance (lomin) she led half-way across, and proved her stamina by finishing comparatively fresh, while more than half of the male competitors gave up long before the tape was reached. At the conclusion Miss Large was loudly cheered by the crowd of spectators and a substantial sum was subscribed on the beach to present her with a trophy as a memento of her feat.
