SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. (Per Press Association.) Greymouth, February 17. At an inquest held to-day touching the death of John McGeady, whose body was found on the North Beach on January 17, evidence showed that the deceased had been drinking on New leai s Day, on which day he disappeared. George Braidwood said he had been told that deceased was assaulted by a man named Phillips on New \ear g, night. The deceased w'as w eai iug a valuable gold chain when last seen which was missing when the body was recovered. During the hearing, one witness was locked up for appearing in Court intoxicated. RUN DOWN BY A TRAIN. Dunedin, February 17. Miss Ellen Turnbull, aged about 75 years, was fatally injured by the first express from the north, between Waianakarua and Herbert, to-day. The accident occurred just after the train had passed a sharp turn on the down grade. Apparently the deceased, who was somewhat deaf, did not hear the driver’s warning whistles, find before the train could be stopped she was struck down. She was very seriously injured, and died soon afterwards. ‘ ACCIDENT TERMINATES FATALLY Dunedin, February 17. John McLellan, aged 28 years, who was admitted to the hospital on the 6th inst., suffering from severe injuries sustained at Patearoa on the Ist iust., died this morning. It is surmised that he fell off a dray when crossing a water race. The accident resulted in the deceased being deprived of his power of speech. AN OLD MAN’S DEATH. Christchurch, February 17. Thomas McCready, the old man who w'andered aw r ay from his home over, a week ago, and was found on Sunday at Chaney’s Corner in a exhausted condition, died in the hospital this afternoon. MOTOR CAR FATALITY. Auckland, February io. A Maori named Reihana, aged 70, w'as knocked down by a motor car on the road near Taupo. He walked home, but subsequently expired.
