COMPARISON OF BOROUGH RATES.

WHAT OTHERS PAY. (To the Editor “Stratford Post.’’) Sir.—Under the above boding veru ’ -j' • published last Friday a statement showing the average amount of rates paid per head by the ratepayers of various boroughs, the purpose in view icing “to show that Stratford could afford to have a few improvements without making the ratepayers pay more than the citizens of other towns.” It appears to u. 6 t-Lat suc.i i question would depend on the property possessed by the ratepayer s concerned, and not on thu number of persons. Surely the best comparison would be the ratio of rates to the capital value of rateable property ia the respective boroughs. From the same official year book, viz., 1912, used for the compilation of the figures already published, J have compiled the following table, which provides a comparison of rates paid in the same boroughs. The rates collected are worked out iu pence to three decimal places. ft would be interesting and instructive to publish Tie table supplied herewith side by ado with the table previously pub-lished.—-I am, etc., J. B. RICHARDS. Table previously’ published showing the average amount paid by each ratepayer is as follows:

In Xevv Plymouth tho average paid by each ratepayer is £8 6s lOd, and at Inglewood £7 2s Id. Table supplied by Mr Richards:

If interest on tho proposed loan of £42,000 at 5 per cent is added to our present ratios Stratford would then have to pay 3.961 d in the .£.
