XOX-COMBATANTS IX ADRIANOPLE. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) Paris, February 11. I Tlie French Government has requested permission for the Consuls and -00 Europeans to leave Adnanoph. Fulgaria, in reply, quotes the German precedent of the seige of Paris. The French Government maintains its demand. SERVIA WANTS TO BARGAIN Belgrade, February 11. It is reported that the Bulgarians require further Servian assistance. Troops are in readiness, hut the Government desires an assurance with regard to the retention of various towns now occupied by Servian troops. 11 also wants a strip of territory giving access to the Aegean Sea. TURKISH LANDING PREVENTED. Sofia, February 11. When the Turks landed at Charkeui the Bulgarians quickly hemmed them in and drove them panic-stricken to their vessels. The Bulgarian infantry and artillery maintained a deadly fire, and killed and wounded thousands. The Bulgarian casualties did not exceed a hundred.
The Bulgarians, being exposed to the warships’ fire, retreated to fresh positions, six kilometres to the rear, and are throwing up entrenchments before Bulair. TURKEY ASKS FOR INTERVENTION. London, February 12. The Daily Telegraph states that it is understood that Turkey, through Tewfik Pasha, has formally requested the intervention of the Powers. It is announced that the Powers’ neutrality prevents them acceding to the request. A PICTURE OF CONSTANTINOPLE The Daily News Constantinople correspondent reports that the situation there is extraordinary. Business is at a standstill. There have been many fires. The inhabitants are indulging in amusement and pleasure,, unheeding the war. Cholera has broken out on the Asiatic shore. The Government is in desperate straits for money, and is compelling rich merchants to subscribe. The Crown jewels have' been hypothecated. TURKS AND BULGARIANS. Constantinople, February 12. Other reports state that the Turks sortied on' Sunday and captured, at the bayonet point, the Bulgarian position on the Daliden Hills, inflicting severe loss. The troops at Chataldja have have joined forces at Papazbourgas and occupied the heights westwards. Sofia, February 12. The Government has issued a statement declaring that the Turks are inventing imaginary victories. There have been no important engagements at Chataldja, while 15,000 Turks were killed and wounded at Bulair. rne Bulgarians have already buried 2500 Turks, and 3000 corpses are still scattered on the field. GREEKS DEFEAT TURKISH MOVEMENT. (Received 8.0 a.m.) Athens, February 12. The Greeks frustrated the Turkish attempt to occupy a defile at Zavreke, near Janima. Many Turks were killed and the force lost much war material. The Greek losses were small. General Mathemanoula was slightly wounded. TURKEY’S’ INDEBTEDNESS. The Government is inviting the five great Powers’ Ambassadors to a financial conference to discuss the distribution of the Turkish debt among the Balkan Allies when they,, re installed in the conquered territory. Preliminary investigation places the amount of the debt between eighteen million sterling. The Cabinet is discussing a substantial strengthening of the artillery to meet the contemplated German army improvements. ENVER BEY’S ARMY. (Received 9.10 a.m.) London, February 12. Reuter’s Constantinople agent states that Enver Bey and 60,000 men safely landed at Eregli under cover of the guns of the fleet. '1 he Bulgarians retired to the Ergene lines, where there is a prospect of a general engagement. Troops are advancing from Chataldja to co-operate with Enver Bey’s force. Hundreds of Circassians have been sent to Midia with instructions to harass the Bulgarian communications. The first attempt failed, the Circassians being ambushed and wiped out.
