The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1913. LIFE-SAVING AT SEA.

Since the loss of the great steamship Titanic the question of securing greater safety at sea has exercised the public mind and the attention of the authorities a good deal. It is now understood that the British Board of Trade has completed the work of redrafting the rules of life-saving atj sea, of which the original was issued during the summer recess and was laid on the table of the House of Commons on the first day Parliament reassembled. On that occasoin there was discussion and criticism of Mr Buxton’s proposals, which were supposed to embody lessons drawn from the loss of the Titanic. Since that time the draft rules have undergone considerable modification!. Shipowners have been particularly active in the interval, and some very essential changes, for most part in the direction of levelling down rather than levelling up are expected. The rules, it is expected, will come into operation on March Ist of this year. When the last mails left it was not expected that the Government would bo able to introduce its bill for the installation of wireless telegraphy on ships before the consideration of| these rules. The measure proposes extending wireless to the smaller type of passenger-carrying ships, and is meeting with a good deal of criticism from owners of these vessels. It is also pointed out that cargo-carrying ships ought not to be exempted from the bill, because of the assistance they may be able to give other vessels.
