SPORTING.
Mr Barney Thompson, who for many years was a leading member of the Australian betting ring, but has long had his headquarters at Germyn street, London, is again on a visit to Sydney. Mr Thompson, a brother of the late Mr “Joe” Thompson, is as light in the step and as dapper as ever (says tiie Daily Telegraph), and does not seem a dqy older than when last here. Since his previous . visit, Mr Thompson has done much travelling, but his love for Australia is as keen as ever, and he finds the attracttions here too much to resist. Like many others who have had much experience of racing in the Old and new countries, our visitor does not think we have anything to learn in the way of conducting race meetings, or providing comforts for all classes of patrons. He does not, however ,think that our horses are quite as good as the best in England, and he is not in the least surprised to find Australians just as keen as ever in their pursuit of all healthy descriptions of sport. Mr Thompson’s stay here will be only brief, for it is necessary that he should be back in England when the racing season starts next month.
