SPORTING.
Mr E. J. Watt contradicts the statement cabled from Melbourne to the effect that Midnight Sun would be an unlikely starter for the Australian Cup. Ho says the horse is a sure starter, providing nothing goes amiss in the meantime. The Johannesburg Sunday Times of December 29th says there was a sensational finish in the South African Nursery Plate. As generally anticipated, the race resolved itself into a match between Unequalled and Capei Sauce. The two from the send-oh came right away from the other seven teen. Unequalled had fairly taken the measure of Caper Sauce with half a furlong to go, but it was then noticed tht the colt’ jockey was in i precarious position, his saddle having slipped back. The question would lu get past the post in safety flashed into the minds of many. When Watson war unshipped it looked from some park of the stands that Unequalled haf reached the goal; but it was not so. the colt was riderless as he crossed the line. It was exasperating ill luck' for fill connected with Unequalled that the colt should thus misr winning the richest stake of the season. \
