The Stratford Evening Post. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1913. THE SCOTT EXPEDITION.

lii every part of the civilised world to-day deepest regret will be felt at the news of the calamity' which overtook Captain Scott and his intrepid band of seekers in the unknown regions of the South. On the arrival of the Terra Nova at Oamaru yesterday, the greatest secrecy was observed, and singularly it is from London this morning first comes the unexpectedly sensational news that Scott and J>arty perished in a blizzard after reaching the Pole. New Zealand has taken such a live interest in Antarctic exploration and especially in Captain Scott’s doings that the loss will come almost as a personal one to most of us. Tho Terra Nova was not expected to return until March and Mrs Scott left San Francisco only a few days ago hoping to meet her husband in New Zealand on his return. In her great loss this brave woman will have tho deepest sympathy of every man and every woman iu tho land. Tho story of how the gallant band met Death is filtering slowly through: oven here commercialism has stepped in and until tin purchasers of tho copyright of the expedition’s story, in far-off London, have had their twenty-four hours’ start agreed to in tho bond, we must possess our souls in patience. Put this wo at least now know: Scott’s name must he added to the list of gallant explorers who have given up their lives in the effort to wrest Nature’s last secrets from her for tho world of science.
