Newton King’s Weekly Report. On Friday, 31st January, at my Waiwakaiho yards, I had a fair entry with a small attendance of buyers. The demand throughout was slack, only good young cattle being wanted. Mixed weaners sold at from £1 11s 6d to £1 15s 6d, yearlings mixed £2 12s to £3 7s Gd, springing heifers from £5 5s to £8 12s Gd, store cows £2 10s 6d to £3 6s, fat cows £5 14s to £6, bulls £2 13s to £4 7s Gd, 2i-year heifers £4 3s to £4 15s, 3-year bullocks £5 ( Js. At Stratford on Saturday, Ist February, for my monthly horse fair I had a catalogue of 110 horses. The attendance was good and there was a fair inquiry for good\ harness horses but poor sorts and weedy hacks were hard to quit. Light horses were yarded in good numbers, but in most cases the vendors’ reserves were too high. I quote: Good spring-carters £l2 to £22, horses £l9 to £25, hacks £3 to £l2; vehicles sold as follows: Cortland wagons £lB to £22, gigs £l6 to £24, long shafter £l2. At Douglas on Monday I held my first sheep fair for the season, when about 7000 sheep were yarded. There was a good attendance and competition was good for most classes, 2-tooth ewes meeting with least inquiry. Two extra good lines, of forward wethers from Messrs K. Meuli and A. G. Stewart respectively attracted keen competition and sold well, as did also a line pen of shorn lambs from Mr Fred. Bayly, the latter topping the market at 9s Bd. I quote prices as follows: 2-tooth ewes 15s, 4-tooth to I'.f.m. ewes 11s Id, f.m. ewes 5s 2d to 10s Id, 2-tooth wethers 13s 7d to I Is 2d, 4-tooth forward wethers (good) 16s Id, shorn lambs (good) 9s ]d to 9s Bd, ordinary sorts 6s 4d to 7s 6d, cull lambs 5s to 5s Gd. At Stratford on Tuesday there was a good yarding and attendance. Weaners, bulls and store cows met with good competition, but enquiry for oilier classes was not quite as keen as usual. Mixed weaners made 2Us to 35s 6d, woaucr heifers coloured 48s 20-month to 2-year heifers £3 14s Gd to £3 18s Gd, yearling steers 3-ls Gd to 555, store cows £2 9s to £3 15s, forward cows £4 to £4 17s Gd, fat cows
