Birdie Bullock, aged twenty-one daughter of a well-known pastoralist at Stoney Creek, after joking at the table, went into her room and was discovered shortly afterwards in agony. She subsequently died, it is supposed from poisoning. STEAMER OFFICERS’ STRIKE. The secretary of the Merchant Service Guild has received advice that the captain and officers at Adelaide have decided not- to go to sea unless paid overtime by to-morrow. KILLED BY LIGHTNING. William Cosgrove, aged twenty, son of the owner of Waterview Estate, Grafton, was killed instantaneously by lightning. A SUBMARINE EARTHQUAKE. Tho Norddeutscher liner Scharnliorst, while crossing the Indian Ocean en route for Australia, on January 19th, vibrated violently from end to end, resembling the engines being fullspeeded astern. The startled passengers rushed on deck. It was a delightfully calm night and moonlight. The incident was explained as a submarine earthquake. The shock lasted forty-five seconds. TENDERS FOR BOOTS. Melbourne, February 7. Tenders have been invited from Commonwealth manufacturers for a hundred thousand pairs of boots for tho Defence Department.
