RIFLE SHOOTING.
TARANAKI RIFLE ASSOCIATION. The ninth annual shoot was held at Rewa Rewa rifle range at Waiwakaiho yesterday. There are no fewer than seventy-one competitors from Non Plymouth, Stratford, Rahotu, Whangamomona, Kaponga, Pohokura, Patea, Eltham, Tariki, Tarata and Mongorei competing. There are eleven Territorials from the B Company (New Plymouth), and one from Eltham, whilst three of the staff officers are Competing. The shooting on the »whole was good, though the light and wind, principally the former, baffled many of the old shots as well as the younger ones. Seventeen possibles were notched, viz., one at 300yds, ten at 500yds, and six at 600yds. The arrangements at the range were perfect (says the News). Lieut.-Colonel Okey was in charge of the whole arrangements, and had with him as range officers, Captain Lampen and Lieuts. Messenger and Humphreys (Inglewood). Col.-Sergeant Armitage had charge of a squad of twelve markers—one to each target—who did their work well. There were only 21 challenges during the day, and the majority of these were not sustained. The catering was in the hands of the Association itself. The results are as follows: KAPONGA MATCH; 7 shots at each of the 300 and 500 yards ranges. Thirty prizes, 10 of which are for tyros.
