DEATH OF MENELIK 11.
EMPEROR OF ABYSSINIA. London, February 3 The African World states that Emperor Menelik 11. is dead. Prindo Lidj Jeassu has succeeded him. . Abyssinia is a country of North Africa, and occupies a highland region south-west of the Red Sea. The country is made up of a number of States, the chief of which are Tigre in the north, Amhara in the west and centre, and Shoa in the south. After the defeat and suicide of King Theodore, in 1868, Prince Kassa of Tigre assumed the chief power as Johannes 11. To him, in 1889, succeeded Menelik 11., King of Shoa, who was born in 1842, and was a G.C.B. and G.C.M. G. In June, 1908, he nominated Lidj Jeassu (born 1896), son of Ras Mikhael and the Emperor’s daughter, Shoagash, as his successor. In May, 1909, Lidj Jeassu was married to Princess Romaine (born 1901), granddaughter of the Emperor Johannes 11., and niece of the Empress Taitou. Two days after the marriage Lidj Jeassu was proclaimed heir to the Imperial throne.
