On Friday evening the Hawke’s Bay Amateur Boxing Association held a very successful carnival in the Princess Theatre, Hastings. There was a crowded house. The taking amounted to £l4O. The chief item was a contest between Lyn Truscott (welter-weight champion of New Zealand) and J. Hegarty, of Timaru (light-weight champion of New Zealand) for a purse of £SO. ' This produced a most interesting and scientific contest. Hegarty, who had an unbeaten record, was conceding 101 b to his opponent, and the championship was not involved.

The Timaru lad entered the ring as fit as the proverbial fiddle, and, during the earlier rounds, gave his opponent not a moment’s peace. As the contest progressed, his pace slackened, but, until the final round, he was all the time keen to engage his bigger and more experienced opponent.

Truscott was not so fit as Hegarty, yet he lasted remarkably well, and his superior science enabled him to find favour with the referee (Mr Sampson, of Wellington) on points. The decision was not popular, for Hegarty is a great favourite in Hastings, and the crowd, in making their adjustment could look no further than "the little marvel” who had made all the fighting. The bout was contested on both sides with the utmost fairness.
