Newton King’s Weekly Report. • On Friday, 24th January, for my annual Kaponga weaner fair and cattle sale I shad a very big entry and a big attendance of buyers. Idost of the weaners yarded wore small, being whey fed, but were all good coloured cattle. Bidding throughout was keen, exceptionally so on a line of picked Jersey heifers yarded by Mr Martin Steiner, Those were started at 455, and were secured by Mr C. Crowley after brisk competition at £3 Is Gd. The demand for good forward cows and bulls was first-class, everything with the excepton of a pen of small wearier steers was cleared at the followin rates: Jersey weaner heifers from £2 9s to £3 Is 6d, grade heifers £1 11s Gd to £1 17s 6d, small £1 4s 6d, weaner steers £1 10s 6d to £1 16s, mixed weaners £1 Bs 6d to £1 12s Gck bulls from £3 9s to £6, according tft weight, fat working bullocks £5 IBs, fat heifers £5 4s, fat cows £5 10s to £6 4s, forward cows from £4 14s to £5 3s, store cows £3 15s 6d to £4 ss, small or aged £1 4s 6d to £2 10s, lambs 9s. At Urenui on Monday 27th there was only a small entry which sold as follows: Springing heifers £4 7s 6d to £8 10s, dairy cows £6 to £8 10s, fat cows £6 Is, forward cows £4 lbs Gd to £5 4s, 20-month heifers £3 16s to £4 7s Gd, heifers, in calf £4 13s to £5 17s Gd, 20-month steers £3 14s to £3 16s Gd. On Tuesday, 28th, store cows sold at from £2 11s to £3 17s Gd, forward cows £4 5s to £5 3s, 2J-year steers, small, £4 7s Gd, 18-month heifers £3 10s, bulls from £5 13s to £6 15s. Private sales for the week were as follows: 16-month steers £3 to £3 18s, weaner steers up to £1 16s, weaner Jersey'heifers £2 to £3, weaner grade heifers £1 12s Gd to £1 17s, 2£-year heifers in calf £4 18s Gd, steers (good) £5 ss, 2£ to 3-year steers £5 12s Gd, 2J--year steers with some colour £4 12s Gd, fat cows £5 10s to £6 15s, forward cows up to £5, store cows £3 10s to £3 15s, cows and calves £3 10s to £5, fat heifers £6, bulls £2 10s to £4 10s, 2 and 4-tooth wethers 14s 9d to 15s, 4 and 6-tooth wethers (forward) 17s, 2-tooth ewes 16s to 16s 6d, g(WI line breeding ewes £1 0s Gd, fat ewes 14s 9d, fat lambs 13s to 14s, lambs in the wool from 10s Gd to 11s 3d, for a very nice line, others from 8s Gd to 9s 3d. London Wool Sales. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd and Reduced, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 29th January:—The sales closed strong, with good competition; 130,000 bales of wool were sold, of which 43,000 bales were taken for the Continent and 9000 for America; 5000 bales were held over. As compared with last sales’ closing rates prices are higher by about par to 5 per cent for crossbred lambs, scoured Merino super and medium greasy crossbred; higher by about 5 per cent for merino inferior greasy merino super, scoured merino medium and fine greasy crossbred; higher by about 5 per cent to 7\ per cent for greasy merino medium and lambs. Prices are about the same for crossbred scoured, coarse greasy crossbred and crossbred slipe. London Markets. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. and Reduced, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 29th January:— Tallow.—We quote present spot vav lues for the following descriptions: Good mutton 39s Gd per cwt, good beef 35s 3d, mixed 33s 6d. The market is active.
Wheat.—We have sold at 37s 7.)d net an Autradian cargo. The market is quiet but steady owing to increased supplies and the outlook for Argentina market prospects is uncertain. Oats.—We quote Cartons 255. The market is fair.
Webster, Dobson amt Co.'s Stock Report At Stratford on Tuesday last we had a good yarding of stock, with a large attendance, and competition throughout was spirited, most of the yarding being sold at the hammer. We quote: Mixed weaner steers 30s to 35s 6d, do. heifers 33s to 365, coloured do. 44s 6d to 50s, 18-mouth steers £3 Os to £3 I.ls, 2-year steers £4 6s, 18-month heifers £3 9s 6d to £4, Jersey do. £5 ss, store cows £2 4 s to £3 ss, forward do. £3 12s 6d to £4 11s, fat do. £5 5s to £8 Bs, cows and calves £5 9s, young hulls 35s to £2 18s (xl, bulls £4 10s to £B. On Wednesday he held our Stratford sheep fair. Between 4000 and 5000 sheep were yarded. There was a large attendance. Competition was, however, patchy, several pc no being passed at the hammer, although reserves in many cases were on the high side. We quote: s.m. owes 10s 10d to 11s 2d, 2-tooth ewes 14s 4d, fat and forward do. 13s Od, 2-tooth to 6tooth owes 15s 6d, shorn ( lambs 8s lid, woolly lambs 11s, cull do 5s to 6s 7d. held our usual monthly sale at Kohuratahi, when wc had a full yarding of 212 cattle and a. few sheep. There was a keen demand for stock, especially young cattle. Weaners, (real good lines) 39s to 40s, 18-month steers (medium) 71s to £3 14s to £3 17s Gd for good class of cattle, 2-year steers £4 17« Gd to £4 14s, 18-month heifers £3 7s to £3 Its Gd, good frame forward cows £4 16s to £5 2s, heifers in calf £4 Is, cows and calves £5, fat cows £5 6s, store cows 325, poor £3 8s Gd to £4 6s, bullocks (3| years old) £6 7s Gd, good 2)-year steers £5 Pis Gd, bulls £3 7s, f.m. ewes 6s, 2-tooth Romney rams 1 to 2f guineas.
On Tuesday, 28th ult., we held our usual fortnightly sale in our Stratford yards, when we had a full yarding of 707 cattle. Bidding was not quite so keen as at the previous sale, but we quitted practically all lines at the hammer or afterwards. Weaners (fair) 30s to 32s Gd, good quality to 37s 6d, store cows 65s to 92s Gd, fat and forward cows 95s to llGs, bulls 65s to 182 s, 2) to 3)-year bullocks 119 s to 130 s, 2-year empty heifers 90s to 100 s, 18-month steers 67s to 755, 18-month empty heifers 65s to 77s Gd, Jersey-Hoi stein heifers 80s to 955.
During the week we have sold privately: 18-month steers 65s to 72s Gd, 18-month heifers (empty) 67s Gd to 72s Gd, 18-inonth heifers r.w.b. 75s to 80s, 2.)-year steers 90s to 112 s, weaners 30s to 38s, store cows 65s to 72s 6d, fat cows 112 s 6d to J22s Gd, 2-tooth wethers 13s Gd to 14s, 4-tooth wethers 15s to ICs 3d, 2-tooth owes 15s to 15s 6d, 4 and 5-year ewes 10s Gd to 12s 6d, bulls 65s to 117 s Gd, ewes and lambs 19s.
