WORK AND WAGES.

“AMENITIES” AT A DEBATE. * (Received 8.40 a.m.) London, February 2. During a trade union debate, Mr mio'fn fbh'GhP morganshire E.), violently attacked Viscount Wolmer (Unionist M.P. for Lancashire SAY.), and Earl Winterton (Unionist M.P, for Horsham D. Sussex), for betraying trade union interests. Lord Robert Cecjl described Mr Edward’s conduct as tactics of a kind that make politicians stink in the nostrils of honest'men. No prudent man could accept Mr Edwards's statement without verifying the source from which it was supposed to be drawn. TRADE UNION, CONGRESS. London, January 31. Mr Bonar Law agreed that the Osborne Judgment placed trade unions in an invidious position. It was only right they should have liberty to engage in politics. It was untrue that the Unionists opposed trade unions. The latter’s efforts in the House of Commons to Improve social conditions and wages had been a lamentable failure. It was bad that the Socialists had captured the organisations of the trade unions, which could only be successful if the men acted as a solid union. Owing to differences of political views among members it was not desirable that trades unions should be identified with any onb party. Sir Rufus Isaacs denied f-hat the Labour Party had not secured an improvement in wages and conditions. PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. London, February 2. At Aherdare/2600 men have struck as a protest against working with nonunionists. A FIVE-DAYS’ WEEK. (Received 9.5 a.m.) London, February 2. A ballot of Northumberland and Durham colliers largely favoured a five-days’ week, but it is doubtful if a two-thirds majority will be obtained.
