Dr. J. Pirie Cameron, M. 8., has been posted to No. 4 Field Ambulance.

Mr Alexander Macfarlane, of Achray, a well-known Canterbury runholder, died last week, aged 50.

The death of; Admiral Sir F. G. D. Bedford, aged 75, is ’announced. He entered the Royal Navy in 1852, and was present at the bombardments of Odessa and Sebastopol.

Mr C. H. Burton, of DunedK. v,ho has been appointed Chief Postmaster at New Plymouth, was fareweilod by a large and representative gathering 1 on Monday last. Mr Burton nad been connected with the Du red in cilice for upwards of six years ti ling the positions of accountant and assistant postmaster. Mr W. M'Hntchesen. the Chief Postmaster, presented Mr Burton, on behalf of the clerical staff, with a pocket aneroid and a traveller’s knife, and m doing so conveyed the best wishes of the officers for his future welfare and their regrets at losing him. Mr Burton, in replying, thanked the officer? for their expressions of good will ami for Itheir loyalty to him during his term Of office. He mentioned tuat he had only some few years more to serve, he having 38 years’ service, and that he would look on his time spent in Dunedin as amongst the ' happiest years of his official career. He had been,,in eevry large office in the colony including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, New Plymouth, Blenheim, and Nelson, and during' that time he had served under more than 15 different chief postmasters,. He had seen many changes in the service and worked with many staffs, and he desired to work with no better staff than the Dunedin one. He would always be glad any of the officers, and when he retire ! to his farm would always have a spare room for old Mr Burton was also the recipient of an umbrella from the letter-carriers’ branch, the presentation being a surprise one. Mr Burton suitably responded.

Prince Lichnowsky, German Ambassador in London, at a banquet given by German residents in honour of the Kaiser’s birthday, delivered a glowing eulogy on the Kaiser’s work in the interests of peace between England and Germany.—Cable.

Sergeants Thomas Laverty and L. H. In the General Orders, 1913, just issued, appears an entry of the transfer of Lieuteiifant Frank Bird, from the Stratford Senior Cadets to the Whangarei Senior Cadets. Lieutenant Bird was a very enthusiastic officer when in Stratford, and was exceedingly popular here, arid his friends will)'be pleased to learn that he is continuing his labours in this direction in Whangarei.
