DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.

Second Edition

THE PACIFIC FLEET

NEW ZEALAND’S EXPEDITION-

ARY FORCE

(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) (Received 8.0 a.in.) London, January 31. , The Hon. James Allen, interviewed, iaid that the full burden of a Pacific Fleet should be borne by those living in the Pacific. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, even Africa and India, should unite for that purpose. Local navies for local purposes would be useless; the Fleet must be under one control. New Zealand hoped to place an expeditionary force of 8000 at the disposal of the Mother Country for service in any part of the Empire. AN APPRECIATION. The ‘Pall Mall Gazette’ says: “Mr. Allan’s offer of 8000 men is another instance of New Zealand’s patriotism. If other Dominions organise similarly, this will yield an army ready for service almost equalling the Motherland’s expeditionary force. Meanwhile it will be necessary to establish Imperial patrol routes.”
