Reid, broad jump, and high jump. CRICKET. THE SHEFFIELD MATCH. Sydney, January 24. The Sheffield Shield match opened in pleasant weather on an excellent wicket. Victoria, batting first, made 274, Baring scoring 19, Armstrong (not out) 118, and Mathews 74. New South Wales, in their first innings, have lost two wickets for 41-—Horden (not out) 23. BOWLING. THE CHRISTCHURCH TOURNAMENT. Christchurch January 24. This morning was simply glorious for the fifth day of the bowling tournament. The Christchurch green was the locale where the sectional ties and green finals were completed. There was. a very large concourse of the public present to watch the various games, and considerable interest was shown. Play in nearly every case was of a very high order, and in some instances reached the height of perfection. In the afternoon an adjournment was made to the Canterbury green, where . the president of the Association (Mr T. Barnett) and Mrs Barnett entertained the ladies and bowlers generally, a large attendance being present. Play did not „ conclude till 7.45, and about 6.30 -a fairly heavy shower fell. Results: — CHAMPION RINK. Green winners: Canterbury No. 1, Porteous (Ponsonby) 25, v. Hain (North End) 22. Sydenham.—First round: Wolf (Hinted) 23, v. Bently (Dunedin) 18; Kerr (Newtown) 19, v Porteous (Ponsonbj) 15. Second round; Kerr (Newtown) 26, v. McDonald (Green Island) 15; Woolf (United) 26, v. McLachlan (Taieri) 19. Final: Kerr (Newtown), ai}4 Woolf (United) played 13 heads, when rain stopped further play, Kerr being < 10 and Woolf 6. McDonald (Green Island) secure*) third prize, and McLachlan (Taieri) fourth prize. CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. ■ Semi-finals: Thomson (Wellington); a bye; Rennie (Southland) 27, y. Casey (Ponsonby) 16.
