August Van Bione, the famous ’cellist, died on the stage, at the Brighton Hippodrome at the conclusion of a dramatic sketch in which the musician played “Home, Sweet Home.” H.M.S. TORCH. Major Archer Shoe, in a letter to the newspapers, referring to the Prometheus and the Torch, said that the whole fault lies in the fact that the present Government, during a year’s office, had not built a single sli p to take the places of small cruisers at the Cape, in the West Indies, and on the Australian and Pacific stations. Cons© quently tho old ships were continually breaking down and being patched up. The Admiralty were shielding themselves in the cases of the Torch andthe Prometheus by censuring or superseding officers in connection with the defective condition of the ships. WRECKAGE EXPLAINED. Brisbane, January 24. The wreckage reported was merely a punt load of furniture belonging to a fisherman, which had capsized. RAILWAY STOCK BURNED. A fire at Wallangarra destroyed four railway passenger carriages, including the old Vice-Regal parlour car. The damage is estimated at £12,000. WIRELESS. London, January 23. Mr. Samuel’s committee is to report within three months as to the merits of the existing system of long-distance wireless.
