FIRE AT TIMBER YARDS.
TWO ACRES IN EXTENT.
THIEVES ASSIST—THEMSELVES
(Received 9.20 a.m. Melbourne,, January 22. Flatman’s timber yards at St. Kilda were destroyed by fire, which originated in the joinery shop above the engine house and spread with extreme rapidity. The brigade was promptly on the scene. The conflagration was then two acres in extent. The brigade succeeded in saving the wooden house's wlijch were thickly surrounded on all sides. They were hampered by the intense heat. Thieves, on the pretence of assisting, robbed a number of residences. The property was partially insured One estimate gives the loss at £60,000, another at £120,000.
