Mr Arthur Windsor, formerly editor of the Age and the Argus is dead.

Mr G. N. Curtis left this morning on his annual trip to the southern lakes district.

Mr John Leitch MacKinlay died in Wellington on Friday night at the age of SO.'

Mr David McLaren (present Mayor) has been selected Labour candidate for the Wellington mayoralty.

Mr W. H. Uttley, Government Overseer for Workers’ Dwellings, died at Dunedin last week, from heart failure.

Mr Kwei Chin, secretary to the Chinese Legation in London, has been appointed Chinese Consul-General in New Zealand.

Mr E. G. Foster was a passenger per mail train this morning en route for the South Island on a fortnight’s furlough.

Mr Gray, District Health Inspector, is paying' a visit to Whangamomona and district, and investigated the circumstances in connection with two cases of scarlet fever at Tahora.

Miss M. Papps, formerly second assistant at the Inglewood School, has been, appointed to the position of sixth assistant to the Stratford District High School.

Mr F. Bowlet, of the Stratford School, has been promoted to second assistant in the secondary department of the Stratford District High School, vice Miss E .N. Bollinger, resigned.

Messrs Anderson, Rutherford and Macalister, solicitors, of Fenton street. Stratford, have been appointed agents for the. Guardian .Assurance Company. Ltd., in place of Messrs Ward and Dunlop, who recently dissolved partnership.

Mr Stuart Seddon, youngest son of the late Mr R. J. Seddon, who has been through a course of study ir England and France as an architect is returning to the dominion this month. Mr Seddon will probably settle in Wellington.

Miss I. /A. Stitt has been appointee temporary assistant in the secondary department of the Stratford District High School, the appointment dating from February Ist, 1913. For the same school, Miss Laura Clejnow, i fifth-year pupil teacher, and Misr I. Cramer, of the Toko school, wit act as a fourth-year pupil teacher.

M. Briand, who is succeeding M Poincaire (now President elect) in tin French Premiership, is a man of ad‘ vailced views. M. -Briand has beer little more than a decade in tin French Parliament. He is an avower Socialist, and was previously Premiei from 1909 to 1911.

Dr. W. J. Dakin, of the University College, London,’ has been appointee professor of biology in the University of West Australia iff place of Dr Wil ley;, of Montreal, who declined the ap pointment by cable. The professorship of history and economics was con ferred upon Mr E. 0, G. Mann, B.A. of the Melbourne University, who i; now lecturer at Brisbane University.

His Lordship the Primate has not been well since his visit to Nelson. In opening thos»Synod on Friday evening Bishop Julius said he regretted tt inform the Synod that the Primati was indisposed. The service of the previous evening, and- the work ol the afternoon, had proved a trial t< him, and he had become very indis posed during the afternoon. Jus before the evening session opened however, he had progressed a little.

Mrs (Dr.) Sloan rturned to Ha wera, after an absence of over fou years in Scotland. Dr. Sloan ha; decided to settle again and practise in Hawera (states; the Star). Owin' to difficulty in securing berths, am being anxious to get here as early a; passible, they were obliged to corm by different routes. Dr. Sloan ex pects to reach Hawera by the middl of February.

Two golden weddings were cele brated in the south of England oi December 3rd, that of the Rev. Ebon ezer and Mrs Anderson, at Dorman’; Park, Surrey, and that of Mr Alfrec Scarse, at Burgess Hill, Sussex. Boti events were celebrated by family ga therings, nearly one hundred relative; of Mr and Mrs Scarse, whp have hiu 14 children, being present. To M. and Mrs Anderson’s celebration break fast the King sent some pheasants.

Fookes, at the meeting of the Stratford School Committee las" night, moved that the committee of fers Mr Tyrer, the headmaster, am the teaching staff, hearty congratula tions on the success achieved by Mas ter Mail, in securing fifteenth placi in the Junior University Scholarship examinations, and third place in tin Junior Civil Service examination; alsc on the achievements of Master Contts in winning the Bayly Memorial Schql arship, and taking premier position it both the scholastic and athletic de partments. The motion was carried unanimously.

The death of the Hon. J. Bryce now leaves the Hon. E. Mitcheleon, of Auckland, as the last surviving member of Sir Harry Atkinson’s Ministry of 18615. The Cabinet in question was comprised as follows: Sir Harry Atkinson, Prime Minister; Sir Frederick Whittaker, Attorney-Gen-eral; the Hon. E. Conolly, the Hon. William Rolleston, Minister for Lands; the Hon, P. Dick, Colonial Secretary; the Hon. R. Oliver, Postmaster-Gen-eral; the Hon. J. Bryce, Native Minister; and the Hon. E. Mitchelson, Minister for Public Works and Railways. The following are the members of the late Mr Bryce’s family surviving; Mrs I). McKenzie, Marton; Mrs G. E. Jackson, Opunake; Mrs T.
