“BANISHED!”
UNDESIRABLES AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, January 17. Five women and two men, who were arrested last Friday night as a result of a raid on a soft drinks shop, pleaded guilty at the Police Court to having no lawful means of support and keeping houses of ill-fame. They were ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on promising to quit the Dominion and not return for four years.
Ludovie Dallegiovanua was charged with having no lawful visible means of support, and also that ho was the occupier of a house in Bourne Street, Mount Eden, which was frequented by persons reputed to be of ill-fame. A plea of not guilty was entered by Mr. Singer, who appeared for accused. Detective Hammond gave evidence that accused had had. De Ville and Dubois staving at his house, and two
I other men previously convicted had on 1 occasions also been there. Accused had ■ been seen in company with a man who j had been flogged in Africa as a pro- [ curer for the white slave traffic, and I who had two and a half years ago ! been convicted in London for another i offence. He had been deported for this j crime. The man had since left Auckland, but one of the women who had that day been convicted had post office orders in her possession when arrested showing that since December she had sent £127 to him in Melbourne. After further evidence by the police in reference to accused’s previous indictments while residing in Seattle, his Worship said that the evidence of the accused in defence amply proved the charge against him, and it showed that he had got himself into trouble in America for the same offence, and that though not convicted he had clearly made it too warm for himself. His Worship was satisfied that the accused was a most undesirable person to have at large in the community. He would be required to leave the country as soon as could be reasonably expected, and would be convicted, and should he return lie would he called upon to come up for sentence.
