M. Poincare’s determination to contest the Presidency in defiance of his party’s wish, led to a -stormy meeting of the party. The speakers characterised M. Poincare a;; an adventurer who had strangled party discipline.

At the first Presidential ballot, M. Poincaire received 281 votes and M. Pams 308 votes. There was a great crowd, and the railways were strongly guarded. M. Dubost opened the Congress, which commenced with a Royal ist demonstration and noisy scenes. M.\ Clemenceau insulted M. Poincare and the latter appointed M. Briand and Knot/, his seconds to arrange a duel. M. Clemenceau headed the movement against M. Poincaire.
M. POINCAIRE ELECTED

Ml. Poincaire was elected, the vot ing being Poincaire 483, Pams 286 Yaillant 69.
