COMPLAINT BY SEAMEN’S UNION.
Wellington, January 16,
The Dunedin ‘Star’ alleges that the Japanese steamer Hakushaki Mam brought to Sydney a cargo of phosphate. Then she proceeded to Newcastle and was challenged with loading coal for New Zealand. The Seamen’s Union, realising that this was unfair competition, and injurious to the interests of the union, challenged the boat’s agents, and it is alleged was assured that the coal was required purely for bunker purposes. It is now stated that the Hukushaki Maru is to-day at Timaru discharging coal consigned to Redpath, of Christchurch, who is acting as the vessel’s agent. The coal is being taken delivery of by the Government for railway purposes. The Seamen’s Union is very angry at being tricked by the statement made as to thf requirements of the coal.
