A PECULIAR DEATH

Gisborne, January 15

Art old identity, ’ >nned Edward James Campion, was found dead under somewhat peculiar circumstance, to-night in a room oil the rear fo the office of James Brow?i, land agent. Brown reported the death at 9 p.m., and stated that Campion came to his office at 4 p.m. and remained there till about 8 o’clock. Campion laid down as though to sleep, and Brown discovered that he was dead. Life war extinct when the police and the doctoi arrived, and two empty whisky bottle wore found near the hotly. Campion . daughter is in Brown’ employ a* clerk. Deceased was a well-know, figure about town, formerly in busi ness as a surveyor, and has relative in Napier. ACCIDENT AT HTJIRANGI. He wa out in the hay-field with his mowing machine, when the breeching broke and the horse started kicking. The body was recovers! two hours later, but life wa- extinct Walter Frederick Lambert, who wa working on the surface when it col lapsed was buried to the shoulde He seized a plank of supporting tim ber, which prevented him being com pletely submerged. An inquest was held to-night o' the victims of the drowning fatalit at Herring Bay, New Brighton, yes terday. A verdict of accidental!, drowned was returned Evidence wa to the effect that Mrs. Height wa in difficulties before her brother-in law Height entered the water. H jumped in partially dressed and wen to her assistance but was dragged un dor, both being drowned.

He appeared to have struck hi; head on something just before hi would-be rescuers could reach him The body sank. Some coal and hen zine tins had been stored amidships and it was suggested that perlmn Brady tripped on these. Tdf had hat some drink, but was said not to he under its influence. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
