CHAMPIONSHIP OF AUSTRALIA

■The tangle round the scuhing championship of Australia is more complicated than ever by Felton’s statement in which lie refuses to accept the title by forfeit. It has been claimed that the title reverts to Charlie Toaviis.

Pearce declares that since Felton discontinued, he can consider downs challenge, but only from the time Felton dropped out, not from the time the first challenge was issued, RIFLE SHOOTING. An attractive series of matches has been arranged for the ninth annual meeting of the Taranaki Rifle Association, which will be held on tiie Rewa Rewa rifle range, Waiwakaiho, on Thursday and Friday, February 6 and 7. Shooting will commence at 7.30 a.m. with the Kaponga match, over 300 and 500 yards. There will be thirty prizes, ten of which are for tyros. In the Inglewood Match (500 and COO yards) the prize money will aggregate £3O 10s, and in the New Plymouth Match (300, 500, and COO yards) the first prize will be Mr. H. Okey, M.P.’s, trophy of £2 2s and the prize money awarded by tne Association. The first prize in the Grand Aggregate will be the Champion Belt (.presented by Mr. T. King), a gold medal (presented by the Licensed Victuallers’ Association, valued at £3 3p) and £1 given by the Association'. The second prize will be a silver medal presented by Mr. J. Bennett, and £1 10s, the third £l, and three prizes of 10s. In the Teams' Match, open to teams from any Territorial Company or Defence Rifle Club, over distances of 300, 500, and COt yards,' the winning squad, will bt awarded £5 and the lisch Memoria. Challenge Cup, to be held for twelvemonths. Other matches will comprise;—Stratford Match (800, 900 and 1000 yards), and the /Patea Match (1000 yards), in each of which no few er than thirty prizes will be allocated. There will also be the Last Try Match, over 500 yards. Figure targets will bt used at the 300 yards range. Entries will close with the secretary of t ie Association, Mr. T. King, at Ingleuood, on Saturday, February 1. Tin. meeting will be open to all-comers, but Territorials must fire in the uniform of their corps.

CYCLING.

VICTORIAN SIX DAYS’ RACE,

Mr. Robert McCullagh, the secretary of the Victorian League, states that a six days’ race will be run agam in Melbourne this year, probably in February. Fred Keefe, who rode so well in the six days’ race, will shortly make an attempt to lower Don Kirkham’s 100 miles world’s road record of 4hr. 3G min. He will probably use the same course as the Victorian. It was understood that the rideis in the six days’ race would divide £IOOO. BOXING. Matches for “Hock” Keys, the Australian light-weight, were the subject; of consideration at a special meeting of the Wellington Boxing Association Executive on Friday evening. Keys has offered to be there on 12th Febr ■- ary. If a match is arranged there wll be another contest In Auckland a week later, and Keys will then retu-n to Australia. The committee had considered the possibility of arranging a fight with J. Hegarty, who had mentioned 24th February as a suitab’e date; and consideration was deferred until it became known whether Hegarty will bo available on 12th February. In the event of Hegarty’s nonacceptance, it is possible that a match may be arranged for Keys with “Jack” Road. The latter will be leaving for Australia shortly, and has offered to box in Wellington for a £IOO purse in February.
