POLITICS IN FRANCE.
London, January 12
The French Cabinet has had a heated meeting, at which M. Poincare threatened to hand in his resignation. He said he believed that not a single member approved of Colonel Paty Ue Clam’s appointment. Ultimately M. Millerand’s resignation was accepted. M. Lebrun will succeed him.
A POLITICAL INTRIGUE.
Paris, January 13,
M. Millerand, in a letter to the Cabinet, said tha(t : ’the reinstatement of Paty de Cl am—was the fulfilment of a promise made by M. Messimy, his predecessor. The action he assumed was not warranted, as of a political character, and, therefore, he tendered his resignation. The Cabinet regretted the explanation was not acceptable to Parliament. M. Besnard, Under-Secretary for Finance, will succeed M. Lebrun. Some quarters regard the incident as part of an intrigue to jeopardise M. Poincare’s prospects for the Presidency.
