SPORTING NOTES
(By “Cicero.”)
The Stratford-owned St. Toney is shortly to be put under the firing iron. His stable, mate Bismarck, who recently went through the same operation, is now in work again. Jack Butler has had his team strengthened by the addition of Draft and Lady Fran. Con the Shaughraun is being kept up to the collar in view of the Trentham fixture. The brother to Grattan is well, and promises to run well in future events.
Black Northern made his reappearance on the race track at Whangarei, but once more showed temper by running, off the track. Grattan, who showed a lot of pace at New Plymouth, is displaying marked improvement. The Coronet gelding is a sure starter,at Trentham, at which meeting he will carry a lot of Taranaki money.
Percy Johnstone has lately taken in hand a half Brother to Sandy Paul. The gelding in question is by Sylvia Park.
It is now believed that Counterfeit is in foal, and the Treadmill filly has been sent to Stonyhurst. Sir G. Clifford recently had this brilliant performer -‘‘fired’ in view of future racing, but will now have to abandon the idea.
Astor, who showed pace for three furlongs at the Taranaki and Stratford meetings, is to he given a run against Jason, Mowbray, and company at Trentham, at which meeting he figures in the Nursery Handicap. There will not be any racing in the Dominion this week, but no less than five meetings will be Held next week—viz., Wairoa 21 and 22, Foxton 21 and 22, Gore 22 and 23, Wellington 22, 23, and 25th, and Bay of Plenty 23rd.
The disappointing Admiral Soult was sold for £SO during the Auckland meeting, and on the last day of that club’s gathering won the Goodwood Handicap, a race worth £275. Such is the luck of racing!
Up to the present, Bobrikoff has contested 42 races. He has won on i 9 occasions, has filled second berth six times, whilst he nas been placed thirl in nine races. The Finland gelding has won more money than any otner horse who has raced in the Dominion, with the exception of Carbine. T.'ie black “demon” cost only £l7 as a yearling!
The handicaps framed by Mr. Pol lock for the Trentham fixture are corn
ing in for a lot of adverse criticism. There is not the slightest doubt that :in letting Bobrikoff off with 9.9 in the Cup Mr. Pollock has taken on a great risk. Fit and well on the day,
the race would be an exercise canter | for Finland’s son. The worst treated, horse in the handicap is Heatherarae (7.7), who, up to the present, has failed to win over a longer course than
eight furlongs. Yet she is put withm a couple of pounds of such good stayers as Mira, Sinapis, and Merrivonia, and asked to concede a stone to horses such as Sandstream and Seatondale, who are in at the minimum. The latter carried 7.0 to victory in the Marton Cup, on his last appearance bi public.
