FOUND DROWNED
Sydney, January 13. The unidentified body found in the
harbour on January 7 has a seaman’s discharge in the pocket with the name of Edward Hickey, 27 years of age, a native of New Zealand. It shows that he was discharged from the steamer Maitai in Sydney on March 7 last.
FATHERLAND-SON TRAGEDY
A DIFFERENT VERSION
Sydney, January 13
A later version of the shooting fatality says that Field’s son saw a stranger at the gate who did not return a friendly greeting. After warning those inside, the reapproaching stranger was fired at. Another son fired a couple of shots to frighten the stranger, who, he now believed, fired in return, killing Field.
SMALLPOX. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Sydney, January 14. There is a case of smallpox aboard the Mataram, which arrived at Thursday Island from Singapore. The patient is convalescent. JAPANESE WARSHIPS. Fremantle, January 14. Arrived: The Soya and Azuma, Japanese cruisers, from Singapore.
