OUTBREAKS IN CHRISTCHURCH
(Per Press Association.)
Christchurch, January 12. A four-roomed cottage in Cashel street, Lin wood, was completely destroyed by fire at 9.43 last night. It was occupied by INliss Harvey, and owned by Mr Calvert. The contents were uninsured. The insurance, if any, on the building, is not ascertainable.
Whilst the brigade was attending this outbreak an alarm was received for fire at Anlsebrook’s large biscuit and confectionery factory, at the corner of Antigua and St. Asaph streets, which was discovered at 10.12. A motor pump and six men were despatched, and they were successful in confining the outbreak to the chocolate room, in which it evidently originated. The drying room above got a little smoke, but it is believed that it will not injure the confectionery which is in moulds. The damage done to the chocolate room is estimated at under £SOO. The buildings and contents are insured in various offices for £30,000, but the details are not ascertainable. Considering the small plant and a fairly large number of men absent at the Cashel street fire, the brigade did excellent work in coping with the outbreak.
