SNOW STORMS AND GALES
WORST BLIZZARD FOR YEARS
MANY WRECKS AND DANGEROUS INCIDENTS.
London, January 12.
Violent gales and heavy snow in the North of England interrupted the telegraph and railways. There are snow-drifts many feet deep.
A blizzard in South Scotland was the worst for years. Work has been suspended in the shipyards.
A Dutch schooner was wrecked at Carnoustie, and the crew of six were gradually swept away. The captain lashed himself to the rigging, and was rescued after twelve hours.
Steamers were wrecked at Yarmouth and Blyth, but the crews were rescued after terrible experiences. Many small craft are ashore at Home, and the loss of life is serious.
There are floods in Glamorgan and South Tipperary. Forty acres of bog near Castlerea slipped and threatened a hamlet.
There was a hurricane in South Ireland, and several houses were blown down at Queenstown.
