SHOCKING INJURIES. Launceston, January 1. A sensational occurrence occurred at Stanley last night during the progress of a ball given to residents hy Captain Roy Holy man, master of the steamer Marrawah, running between Melbourne and the North-West Coast. A display of fireworks was being given by Mr Holyman, in the presence of 100 people, outside the hall. One detonator, such as is used for signalling on board ship, refused to go off, and after several fruitless attempts it was seized by Captain Holyman and thrown into the fire. A terrific explosion ensued, and Captain Holymon and a lady named Mrs Walls were thrown to the ground. They were unconscious when picked up. Half of Captain Holyman’s right car was blown off, the elbow of the right arm was shattered, the right leg fractured in two places, a pellet from the detonator had entered the right armpit, the left hand was mangled to the wrist, and he had also sustained deep wounds about the body. His condition is serious. The ladv escaped with a gashed hand. Several windows in the building were smashed.
