ACCIDENT AT SPORTS,
(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, January 12.
A serious accident occurred at;the Tiniroto Sports on Saturday afternoon. Mr. .George Chase, of Nuhaka, was riding the grey gelding Taihoa in the Pony Jumps, when the hofse struck a hurdle heavily, and, turning ,i somersault, fell on his rider, who appeared to be severely crushed. Mr. Chase was brought to town with all despatch. He is in a serious condition.
A SAILOR DROWNED,
Wanganui, January 12,
A sailor named John Webb Dingle, aged 50, unmarried, a native Of England, was drowned in the river on Friday night, after spending the evening drinking in town. It is surmised that he fell from the gangway when boarding his vessel, the scow Maroro. By means of a fishing line the body was recovered yesterday afternoon. Dingle joined the vessel in Sydney a few weeks ago. Some months ago the Maroro lost a sailor in a similar manner.
TWO MEN KILLED BY A FALL OF
EARTH.
Thames, January 12
A fatality occurred at the New Sylvia mine, Tararu, on Saturday. A fall of earth took place, one of thestopes crushing Joseph Senior and Dayid Christie. The latter was buried beneath tons of dirt, and when the body was recovered life was extinct. The ’mdy, which was knocked about., was found close to the face. Senior’s body was also recovered.

The men killed at the New Sylvia mine were both working in the slopes, and were last seen alive at crib Line. When knock-off time came they did not respond to the call, and the shift boss found that the stope had been carried awav.
A BODY RECOVERED,
New Plymouth, January 13.
The body of Harold Hirst, who was drowned at Mokau on Wednesday, was found this morning on the beach about eight miles north of Awakino River.
A CHANG A LAUNCH MYSTERY
Wellington, January 13. The police received advice yesterday that the body of Alex. McKenzie, one of those aboard the launch which left Aohanga on January 1 and which Had not since been heard of, had been found near the mouth of the Aohanga river. FOUND DEAD IN A BATH. Hastings, January 13. Yesterday morning Mary Boosey Yool, single, aged 52, was found dead in a bath at Flynn’s hotel, at which she was a hoarder. Deceased was seen entering the bathroom about 9 a.m., and shortly after 11 a.m. an employee at the hotel found the door istill locked. The licensee was informed, and the door was forced open. The body was found lying in the bath, which was three parts full of water. Life was extinct. The deceased was a native of Scotland and arrived from Wellington a few days ago to take up a situation. An inquiry is to be held to-day.
FALL THROUGH A SKYLIGHT,
Timaru, January 13,
Bert Hilton, the five-year-old son of George Hilton, fruiterer, fell through a skylight at Marriott’s drapery shop yesterday. It was a fall of 30ft., and the hoy sustained a broken leg, striking a brass rod and dropping on a pile of dress stuff. His head was severely cut, resulting in concussion of the brain. The boy if «t’J' unconscious.
