JOCKEY’S ENGAGEMENT CANCELLED.
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.)
Perth, December 31
The stipendiary stewards’ direction to P. A. Connolly, owner of Saturate, to cancel the engagement of Higgs, a junior jockey, to ride in the Ailaged Stakes, was under the new Australian riding rule, which empowers the stewards “for any reason which may appear to them sufficient,” to order down any jockey. The facts were that Higgs rode Saturate in the December Stakes on Cup Day, and the horse was not placed, while Silver Lad took second place. Yesterday, in the All-aged Stakes, Silver Ladd, who is owned by Mr Connolly, but is leased to C. H Norton, was favourite while Saturate, was at long odds. When Billett took Higgs’ place in the saddle of Saturate, the latter’s- price hardened, and he won by half a length. Connolly complains of harsh treatment, because he brought Turner over from Melbourne'to ride, hut a fall on Cup Day incapacitated the Victorian jockey, while Marshal], who yesterday wor by several lengths the Imperial Stakes, on Saturate, was not available for the All-aged Stakes because he ®was engaged to ride the Adelaide horse Tadanga.
Auckland, January 13. Domino, Hohungatahi, and Henuera have been scratched for all events at the Takapuna Summer meeting.
