NORTH MOUNT LYELL.
BEFORE THE COMMISSION. (Received 9.55 a.m.) Hobart, January 8. At the Nortn Mount Lyell Commission, Mr Cunningham, secretary oil the Lyell Branch of the Miners’ Union, said lie never had as secretary of the Union, written to the Department suggesting that the men were dissatisfiedw itn the means of exit at the mine at North Mount Lyell, or asking that a second exit be provided. Deoolie, working at the 850 ft level, said Cox, the underground foreman, acted admirably; the majority of lives saved at the 8.30 ft level were absolutely due to him. Ryait, shift boss at tlie 1000 ft level, said that even if there had been no smoke the miners would have been unable to got out except by the main shaft. The fumes were so bad that that had tho shift been within 60ft. of No. 40 stope they could not have got through. Tho men who tried died within 30 feet of it .
